Otterday! And Open Thread

Welcome to Otterday! Today’s open thread is hosted by these Oriental Short-Clawed Otterdays, snapped by Vicki Burton at the London Zoo and shared on flickr.

Side short of a group of grey Oriental Short-clawed Otters, the front one in focus, the others increasingly less so. All are looking intently at something off-camera.

Please feel free to use this thread to natter about anything your heart desires. Is there anything great happening in your life? Anything you want to get off your chest? Reading a good book (or a bad one)? Anything in the news that you’d like to discuss? What have you created lately? Commiserations, felicitations, temptations, contemplations, speculations?

  1. What happened to the bit where it listed the most rcent comments grouped by thread? All the comments I hadn’t read yet were in bold as I recall, for fast and easy lurking reading.

  2. the catastrophic server meltdown last week meant a lot of plugins had to be deactivated. I’m bringing them back slowly, as I find time while I’m racing around doing elder-care. It might take me a while to get to that one, because it chews up a hella lotta CPU cycles.

  3. @tigtog I’ve been thinking of you and your family this week, sending you *hugs* and much love.

This weekend we get to fix the rabbit hutch. Again. They seem to have eaten through the strips of timber supporting the upper level, which fell down with them either on or under it in the middle of the night. Luckily they all seem fine.

  4. I just finished reading Chicks Unravel Time (sequel to Chicks Dig Time Lords). Almost every essay was hugely thought-provoking, with a couple dramatically changing the way I think about the Doctor Who / companion relationship.

I also put together a piece of furniture by myself, for the first time. (My husband usually does it.) It was like an enormous Lego set.

  5. Very happy to have done a blog entry yesterday – first time in a while. Even better, it’s one Mr K dictated! Between stinking hot weather, continuing leg trouble and general stress, writing, let alone channelling, hasn’t been a thing for ages.

Part of said blog was about Mr K finally doing what we’ve been joking about for some time – sporting a cat’s tail. He reports that the urge to chase it is almost irresistable.

Now to do a picture …

  6. I’ve just read that one of my mum’s friends has died. Leukaemia. They’ve been friends for as long as I can remember. Mum probably doesn’t know yet, she’s away on a camping holiday and doesn’t have a reliable phone signal.

  7. (((hugs))) Mim and Tigtog.

I have just taken the kids to the annual local show. While there I had a chat with the independent candidate for the upcoming election. We have a Liberal guy who expects to take over from the present incumbent who is retiring (and is probably right unfortunately), this Independent who was a Nationals person but protested that the Nats agreed not to run their own candidate so went independent/was kicked out of the Nats, Christian Democrats and a Bob Katter Party person. No Greens and no Labor yet.

Anyway he is pro same sex marriage – he thinks that all unions should be civil then if you want to you can go to your Church and get married in the eyes of the church but it is only legally binding if you do the civil service first.

He thinks abortion is a matter of conscience for the woman concerned.

On refugees he doesn’t like detention centres, he thinks people should be able to live in the community and work while their refugee status is being determined. Which is all well and good. The only problem is that he thinks that once the situation which caused the refugees to come to Australia in the first place is resolved we should send them back home. While in practice this is unlikely to happen for many refugees because many of them are fleeing persecution which is unlikely to ever be resolved, I wouldn’t want the threat hanging over their heads. But still better than the Stop the Boats rubbish from all the others.

  8. Ugh passive agressive crap on FB. Like if you love your family, ignore if you don’t. Or roll your eyes and ignore if you are over this rubbish.

  9. After listing myself and my 8 year old down for an archery course in spring last year, our names have finally risen to the top of the list (very high demand, due, I suspect to Brave, The Hunger Games and The Avengers, not the post I read on HaT last year). So we get to start early in April. I’m looking forward to it, as is the lad.

Mimbles, when we kept rabbits and guinea pigs, knowing how fond they are of chewing wood, whenever we had suitable untreated clean scrap wood, we would give it to them as a chewing block, a sacrificial anode, if you like. Parts of the hutch that they shouldn’t eat can also be protected with metal to keep them from bringing the roof down.

  10. Hey Kitteh, my hair is long enough to count as a tail, and while I will confess to fidgeting with it, I can’t say I’ve ever felt the urge to chase it.

  11. No, and I am totes totes jealousssssssssssss now! Ebil person.

Good news: a little step forward in dealing with my anxiety overreactingstupidadrenalgland tonight! Triggery stuff slightly less triggery. First time that’s happened. I haz a happy.

    🙂

  12. I don’t have an equivalent photo of my hair, although you can see some of it here: hair . Also me in a silly hat.

My hair is long enough to sit on whilst in a braid, which is how I wear it most of the time. Sitting on your hair is actually mildly inconvenient, as is shutting it in car doors, getting it caught in wet paint, and plugging it into electrical sockets, which are all things that have happened to me. On the other hand, well it’s pretty awesome hair :-).

And hurray for little steps Kitteh.

  13. I’m starting to reassemble myself after a year of majorly worse depression than usual.
